LGBTQ+ Counselling & Affirming Care

LGBTQ+ counselling and affirming care at CTT Wellness offers identity-affirming therapy for queer, transgender, nonbinary, two-spirit, and questioning individuals, couples, and families across Ontario. Whether you are exploring your identity, navigating coming out, processing minority stress, or working through challenges unrelated to your identity, our therapists meet you where you are — without judgment, without an agenda, and without asking you to educate us.

Why Affirming Therapy Matters

Affirmative psychotherapy validates and advocates for the needs of LGBTQ+ clients, welcoming all identities into the space and building trust by reflecting and validating what clients say about themselves, their identity, and their experience. It means your therapist understands you’re a whole person who may be navigating challenges related to identity, discrimination, relationships, or simply life itself. Affirming care helps you heal from internalized shame, process minority stress from living in a world not always designed for you, and build a life aligned with your authentic self. LGBTQ+ counselling at CTT Wellness is built on this foundation, identity is affirmed, not examined; celebrated, not pathologized.

What We Help With

Identity therapy and sexual orientation support address both the universal human experiences we all face and the unique challenges that come with navigating the world as a sexual or gender minority. LGBTQ+ counselling at CTT Wellness welcomes your whole self — questioning or settled, partnered or single, out or private, neurodivergent, racialized, disabled, faithful, or none of the above.

Therapeutic Approaches We Use

We use evidence-based therapies tailored to neurodivergent brains. Standard protocols designed for neurotypical clients often do not work well for autism and ADHD, so we modify everything from pacing to communication style to sensory accommodations. You will never be asked to “fit” a therapy that was not designed for you.

Narrative Therapy

Narrative therapists assist people in linking resources and community, developing a sense of solidarity, and identifying “outsider witnesses” — those who will affirm and support their authentic story. You will explore the stories you have been told about who you should be, deconstruct harmful narratives, and rewrite your story from a place of authenticity and self-determination. Available in person at our Ontario clinics, virtually across Ontario and select Canadian provinces, and in-home or community in select Ontario regions.

LGBTQ+ Affirmative Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)

Affirmative CBT integrates a clear understanding of LGBTQ+ experiences, such as internalized stigma, minority stress, and discrimination-related trauma, and has been found effective in clinical trials across various LGBTQ+ subgroups. DBT skills — mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, interpersonal effectiveness — are adapted to help you navigate the unique emotional intensity that comes with minority stress. Available in person at our Ontario clinics, virtually across Ontario and select Canadian provinces, and in-home or community in select Ontario regions.

Internal Family Systems (IFS)

Explore the different parts of you that developed to survive in heteronormative and cisnormative environments. You might have a part that wants to be visible and authentic, another part that learned to hide for safety, and others managing fear, shame, or anger. IFS helps these parts communicate, heal, and integrate so you can show up as your whole self. Available in person at our Ontario clinics, virtually across Ontario, and in-home or community in select Ontario regions.

Affirmative, Trauma Informed Therapy

For those who have experienced trauma due to violence, rejection, or systemic discrimination, trauma-informed therapy creates a safe space grounded in safety, trustworthiness, peer support, collaboration, empowerment, and cultural awareness. We recognize that LGBTQ+ individuals experience higher rates of trauma and process it through an affirming lens that never pathologizes your identity. Available in person at our Ontario clinics, virtually across Ontario and select Canadian provinces, and in-home or community in select Ontario regions.

Mindfulness, Emotion Regulation, and Nervous System Work

Mindfulness-based stress reduction uses techniques like breathwork, meditation, and body awareness to manage chronic minority stress, reduce anxiety, and cope with dysphoria. You will learn to regulate your nervous system when experiencing microaggressions, discrimination triggers, or dysphoria, creating internal safety even when external environments feel hostile. Available in person at our Ontario clinics, virtually across Ontario and select Canadian provinces, and in-home or community in select Ontario regions.

LGBTQ+ Identity Across Every Stage of Life

three dots - green, purple and blue
LGBTQ+ identity rarely shows up alone. Many of the people we work with are also navigating anxiety, depression, or trauma that has built up over years of minority stress, family rejection, or living inauthentically. Our integrated approach addresses the whole picture — and supports children and teens through children and youth therapy, couples and families through couples and family therapy, and adults through individual adult therapy.

Childhood & Pre-Adolescence

Young LGBTQ+ children are discovering themselves in a world that may not yet have language for their experiences. We work with gender-expansive, gender-creative, and LGBTQ+ kids to help them understand their feelings, express themselves authentically, and build resilience. We support parents in creating affirming home environments, advocating in schools, and understanding their child’s unique needs.

Adolescence & Teen Years

Teens face the complex intersection of identity development, peer pressure, family dynamics, and emerging autonomy. Whether they’re coming out, exploring their identity, navigating dating and relationships, or managing dysphoria, we provide a judgment-free space where they can be fully themselves. We help teens develop coping skills for minority stress, build healthy relationships, and envision futures aligned with their authentic identities.

Young Adulthood & Emerging Identity

This stage often involves deeper exploration of sexual and gender identity, coming out in new contexts (college, first jobs, new cities), navigating adult relationships, and building chosen family. Young adults process how their identity intersects with career goals, living situations, financial independence, and building community. We support this critical period of self-definition and establishment.

Midlife & Established Identity

LGBTQ+ adults navigate long-term relationships, parenting, career advancement, aging, and sometimes late-stage coming out or transition. Midlife brings unique challenges: processing years of living inauthentically, managing chronic minority stress, navigating healthcare systems, or renegotiating identity as bodies and life circumstances change. We help adults build lives that honour their whole selves.

Later Life & Aging Queer Identity

Older LGBTQ+ adults carry decades of resilience alongside unique challenges—historical trauma from living through eras of intense discrimination, navigating healthcare and elder care systems, isolation from biological family, concerns about safety in aging facilities, and processing a lifetime of experiences. We honour elders’ wisdom while supporting their current needs and celebrating their continued authenticity.
