Depression Therapy

When Depression Becomes Too Much

While everyone experiences stress and sadness, depression is different. Depression therapy at CTT helps when low mood, low motivation, and the slow erosion of your emotional health start changing how you function — your energy, your sleep, your ability to feel joy. Depression is a real medical condition, not a character flaw or something you can “snap out of.” Your brain’s neurotransmitters, the chemical messengers that regulate mood, aren’t working the way they should. This isn’t your fault. Whether you’re managing persistent sadness, burnout, or the heavy numbness that comes when nothing feels like it matters, therapy can help you rebuild — and you can start with a free 15-minute consultation whenever you’re ready.

Common Signs of Depression & Mood Disorders

Depression affects your whole self, mind, body, and spirit. It’s more than feeling down; it’s a persistent heaviness that interferes with daily life. You might not have all these symptoms, but if several resonate, reaching out for support could change everything.
N
Persistent low energy or exhaustion that sleep doesn’t fix
N
Overwhelming feelings of hopelessness, emptiness, or worthlessness
N
Sleep changes, either sleeping too much or struggling with insomnia
N
Loss of interest or pleasure in activities you once loved
N
Difficulty concentrating, making decisions, or remembering things
N
Increased irritability, anger, or withdrawal from others, and isolating yourself

How Depression Therapy Can Help

Depression thrives in isolation and unchallenged thought patterns. Therapy interrupts these cycles by teaching your brain new ways to process emotions and experiences. You’ll learn evidence-based coping strategies, identify and shift the thought patterns keeping you stuck, and address the root causes — whether that’s unresolved trauma, anxiety patterns connected to your low mood, relationship issues, or brain chemistry. Most importantly, you’ll reconnect with parts of yourself depression has been hiding: your motivation, your joy, your hope. Recovery isn’t about returning to who you were — it’s about becoming who you’re meant to be, with tools to navigate life’s challenges. Depression also frequently travels with anxiety — the constant worry that keeps you up at night, the dread that meets you in the morning. Treating both together is often more effective than treating either alone.

Depression Therapy Approaches We Use

We combine proven psychological therapies with cutting-edge neuroscience interventions. Our evidence-based modalities target depression and related mood disorders from multiple angles — thoughts, emotions, behaviours, brain chemistry, and nervous system regulation. When traditional therapy alone hasn’t been enough, we offer advanced options like Deep TMS to help your brain heal at the neurological level.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

The gold standard for depression treatment. CBT helps you identify and challenge the negative thought patterns that fuel depression, replacing them with more balanced, realistic perspectives that improve mood and functioning. Available in person, virtually across Ontario and select Canadian provinces, and in-home or community in select Ontario regions.

Deep Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (Deep TMS)

A non-invasive, FDA-approved breakthrough treatment for Major Depressive Disorder, especially when medications haven’t worked. Deep TMS uses magnetic pulses to stimulate underactive brain regions involved in mood regulation, helping rebalance neural circuits without medication side effects. Ideal for treatment-resistant depression. Available in person at our Oakville clinic only.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

When depression is rooted in past trauma or painful experiences, EMDR helps your brain reprocess these memories, reducing their emotional charge and lifting the depression that stems from unresolved pain. Available in person at our St. Catharines and Kitchener clinics (Oakville and Grimsby coming soon), virtually across Ontario, and in-home or community in select Ontario regions.

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)

Especially helpful if your depression comes with emotional intensity, self-harm urges, or relationship struggles. DBT teaches distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness — skills that create stability when everything feels chaotic. Available in person, virtually across Ontario and select Canadian provinces, and in-home or community in select Ontario regions.

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) Skills

Build distress tolerance and emotional regulation capacity. Available in person, virtually across Ontario and select Canadian provinces, and in-home or community in select Ontario regions.

Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT)

Combines mindfulness practices with CBT to prevent depression relapse. You’ll learn to observe your thoughts without getting pulled into negative spirals, breaking the cycle of rumination that keeps depression alive. Available in person, virtually across Ontario and select Canadian provinces, and in-home or community in select Ontario regions.

Interpersonal Therapy (IPT)

Addresses how relationship patterns and life transitions contribute to depression. IPT helps you improve communication, resolve conflicts, and build the supportive connections that protect against depression. Available in person, virtually across Ontario and select Canadian provinces, and in-home or community in select Ontario regions.

Behavioural Activation

When depression has you stuck in inactivity, this approach helps you gradually re-engage with meaningful activities, rebuilding momentum and proving to your brain that you can feel better through action. Available in person, virtually, and in-home or community in select Ontario regions.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Helps you make peace with painful thoughts and feelings while reconnecting with what matters most. Especially useful when depression has narrowed your world or made you feel stuck. Available in person, virtually across Ontario, and in-home or community in select Ontario regions.

Trauma Informed Therapy

Recognizes that depression often has roots in past experiences. Our trauma-informed approach moves at your pace, honours your nervous system, and addresses the underlying experiences feeding depressive patterns. Available in person, virtually across Ontario and select Canadian provinces, and in-home or community in select Ontario regions.

Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT)

Helps you access, understand, and transform the painful emotions underneath depression — often grief, shame, or unmet needs that haven’t had space to be processed. Available in person, virtually across Ontario and select Canadian provinces, and in-home or community in select Ontario regions.

You Don't Have to Push Through This Alone

Depression has a way of telling you that nothing will help, that reaching out isn’t worth the effort, that you should just keep pushing through. That’s the depression talking — not the truth. A free 15-minute consultation is a low-stakes first step. No pressure, no commitment. Just a conversation with someone who understands what you’re carrying. We’ll also walk you through fees, insurance coverage, and what to expect, so the practical side feels manageable too.

Depression Therapy for Adults, Teens, and Children

three dots - green, purple and blue

Depression doesn’t look the same at every age, and neither does treatment. We tailor our approach to where you are developmentally and what you’re facing in your life right now.

For Adults

For adults, depression often shows up alongside work stress, relationship challenges, major life transitions, or feeling disconnected from purpose. We help you rebuild meaning, manage responsibilities while healing, and address the unique factors contributing to your depression — whether that’s burnout, grief, identity struggles, or longstanding patterns.

For Teens

For teens, depression can look like irritability, isolation, academic decline, or risk-taking behaviours. Adolescence is already a time of intense brain development and social pressure; when depression enters the picture, everything feels impossible. We create a judgment-free space where teens can process what they’re experiencing, develop healthy coping skills, and feel genuinely understood.

For Children & Youth

For children and youth, depression might show up as clinginess, physical complaints, behavioural problems, or seeming “different” from their usual self. We use age-appropriate, play-based, and creative approaches to help children express what they can’t yet put into words, while supporting parents in understanding and responding to their child’s needs.

No matter your age, you deserve support that meets you exactly where you are — in person at our Ontario clinics, virtually across Ontario and select Canadian provinces, or in-home or community in select Ontario regions.
