Chronic Pain Therapy
When Pain Affects Every Part of Life
Chronic pain is a neurological condition where your nervous system continues sending pain signals long after an injury has healed, or when no physical cause can be found. Whether you’re living with fibromyalgia, migraines, back pain, post-concussion syndrome, or pain from an accident or illness, this isn’t weakness or exaggeration. Chronic pain rewires your brain and nervous system, creating a feedback loop in which pain, stress, emotions, and physical sensations amplify one another. It affects your sleep, mood, relationships, work, and sense of self. You’re not imagining it, and you’re not alone in feeling exhausted, frustrated, misunderstood, or hopeless. Your pain is valid, and so is your need for support.
Therapy for the Full Weight of Chronic Pain & Concussion
Chronic pain and concussion are not failures of willpower or imagination. They are body-mind conditions that require body-mind therapy — care that addresses the nervous system, the brain, and the emotional weight of living with pain that no one can see.
Concussion recovery brings its own particular challenges. Post-concussion symptoms can include lingering headaches, dizziness, sensitivity to light and sound, brain fog, sleep disruption, and emotional changes — sometimes lasting weeks, months, or longer after the initial injury. If you are navigating concussion recovery, you may be wondering when you will feel like yourself again, why simple tasks feel exhausting, or whether the brain fog and irritability are part of the injury or something else. We offer specialized therapy for fatigue and brain fog alongside concussion management support that addresses the cognitive, emotional, and nervous system dimensions of recovery.
How Therapy Helps With Chronic Pain & Concussion
Chronic pain therapy doesn’t try to talk your pain away – it works with the neuroscience of how pain actually operates. Your brain and nervous system create, sustain, and amplify pain, especially after injury, concussion, or prolonged stress. Therapy helps calm an overactive threat-detection system, rewire pain pathways, and release the trauma often held in the body alongside the pain. The goal isn’t to convince you the pain isn’t real – it’s to help your nervous system learn it doesn’t need to keep producing pain signals on high alert. Real relief is possible, and it’s built on evidence. This is holistic care for chronic pain and concussion — care that honours the full picture of what you are living with, not just one piece of it.Common Symptoms and Experiences
Chronic pain and post-concussion syndrome affect every dimension of your life. Recognizing these patterns is the first step toward getting comprehensive support that addresses not just your physical symptoms, but the emotional, cognitive, and social impact of living with invisible conditions.Therapy Approaches We Use
We combine evidence-based psychological interventions with body-based and technology-supported approaches to target chronic pain and concussion symptoms from multiple angles. Our work integrates neuroscience, nervous system regulation, and therapies that help your brain and body process pain differently. It is comprehensive mind-body care that creates measurable changes.Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) for Pain Management
Pain catastrophizing (“This will never get better,” “I cannot handle this”) amplifies pain intensity. CBT helps you identify and restructure these unhelpful thought patterns, challenge pain-related fears, develop realistic pain appraisals, and break cycles where thoughts, emotions, and pain sensations feed into each other. You will learn active coping strategies that give you more control over your pain experience. Available in person at our Ontario clinics, virtually across Ontario and select Canadian provinces, and in-home or community in select Ontario regions.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
Rather than fighting pain or waiting for it to disappear before living, ACT teaches you to accept pain’s presence while committing to values-based actions. You will develop psychological flexibility, defuse from pain-focused thoughts, and engage in meaningful activities even when pain is present. Research shows ACT significantly reduces pain-related disability and improves quality of life. Available in person at our Ontario clinics, virtually across Ontario, and in-home or community in select Ontario regions.
Mindfulness-Based Chronic Pain Therapy
Mindfulness teaches you to observe pain sensations without reacting with fear or resistance. Paradoxically, this acceptance often reduces pain intensity. You will learn body scan techniques, breath awareness, and present moment focus that calm your nervous system, reduce stress hormones that amplify pain, and create space between pain sensations and your emotional reactions to them. Available in person at our Ontario clinics, virtually across Ontario and select Canadian provinces, and in-home or community in select Ontario regions.
HeartMath Biofeedback
A scientifically validated system that teaches you to regulate your autonomic nervous system through heart rate variability coherence. Using real-time biofeedback technology, you will see your heart rhythm patterns on screen and learn specific breathing and emotional regulation techniques that shift your nervous system from stress response (which amplifies pain) to coherence (which reduces pain). HeartMath has been proven to decrease pain intensity, reduce stress hormones like cortisol, improve sleep quality, and enhance emotional resilience. Available in person at our Oakville, Grimsby, and St. Catharines clinics, virtually across Ontario, and in-home or community in select Ontario regions.
Somatic Therapy and Nervous System Regulation
Chronic pain lives in the body, and healing must involve the body. Somatic approaches help you track physical sensations, release stored tension and trauma, complete interrupted protective responses your nervous system could not finish during injury, and develop interoception. This bottom-up approach complements cognitive therapies by addressing pain at the nervous system level. Available in person at our Grimsby and St. Catharines clinics and in-home or community in select Ontario regions.
Biofeedback
Real-time feedback on physiological signals like muscle tension, skin temperature, and heart rate helps you develop conscious control over typically automatic body responses. Particularly useful for tension headaches, migraines, and stress-related pain conditions. Available in person at our Oakville, Grimsby, and St. Catharines clinics and in-home or community in select Ontario regions.
Neurofeedback
A specialized form of biofeedback that targets brain wave activity, particularly useful for post-concussion symptoms, including brain fog, sleep disruption, and concentration difficulties. Available in person at our Oakville clinic.
Progressive Goal Attainment Program (PGAP)
Chronic pain often leads to complete activity avoidance or boom-bust cycles. PGAP helps you set realistic, incremental goals for physical and social activities, gradually increasing functioning through pacing strategies. You will rebuild confidence in your body’s abilities, expand your life beyond pain limitations, and achieve meaningful goals without triggering severe flare-ups. Available virtually across Ontario.
Interdisciplinary Chronic Pain Program
A comprehensive virtual program that combines multiple therapeutic approaches into an integrated treatment pathway for people with complex chronic pain. Available virtually across Ontario.
Concussion Management
Specialized support for people recovering from a concussion or living with post-concussion syndrome. Addresses cognitive symptoms, emotional regulation, sleep disruption, and the gradual return to work, school, and physical activity. Available in person at our Ontario clinics, virtually across Ontario, and in-home or community in select Ontario regions.
