Grief Therapy
When Grief Feels Overwhelming
How Grief Therapy Can Help
Grief therapy doesn’t erase your pain or rush you through it — it holds space for all of it while helping you find your way forward. You’ll learn to carry your grief without it carrying you, honouring what you’ve lost while rebuilding a life that holds both sorrow and joy.
When grief is tangled with unresolved trauma — sudden loss, violent death, or losses layered on top of earlier experiences — we draw on EMDR and other trauma-informed approaches to help you process what feels too big to face alone.
Grief Therapy Approaches We Use
Grief is deeply personal, and there’s no single “right way” to heal. We draw from evidence-based modalities specifically suited to grief, bereavement support, and loss counselling, tailoring treatment to your unique experience. Whether your grief is fresh or you’ve been carrying it for years, whether it’s from death, divorce, illness, or any significant loss, we have the tools to help you heal.Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT)
Helps you access, understand, and transform the complex emotions that come with grief. EFT creates space for anger, guilt, yearning, and sadness to be felt fully and processed, rather than suppressed or avoided. Available in person, virtually across Ontario and select Canadian provinces, and in-home or community in select Ontario regions.
Narrative Therapy
Supports you in telling and retelling your story of the loss, of the relationship, of who you were and who you’re becoming. You’ll explore how to honour your loved one’s legacy while writing new chapters of your own life. Available in person, virtually across Ontario and select Canadian provinces, and in-home or community in select Ontario regions.
Mindfulness-Based Therapy
Teaches you to be present with your grief without being overwhelmed by it. You’ll learn to observe painful emotions and memories with compassion, creating moments of peace even in the midst of sorrow. Available in person, virtually across Ontario and select Canadian provinces, and in-home or community in select Ontario regions.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
Addresses unhelpful thought patterns that can complicate grief, like persistent guilt (“I should have done more”), self-blame, or catastrophic thinking that keeps you stuck in suffering. Available in person, virtually across Ontario and select Canadian provinces, and in-home or community in select Ontario regions.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
When loss is sudden, traumatic, or tangled with images you can’t stop replaying, EMDR helps your brain process the experience so it no longer overwhelms you in the present. Especially useful for grief tied to traumatic death, accidents, or violent loss. Available in person at our St. Catharines and Kitchener clinics (Oakville and Grimsby coming soon), virtually across Ontario, and in-home or community in select Ontario regions.
Trauma Informed Therapy
Recognizes that grief can reactivate past trauma and that the body holds loss as much as the mind does. Our trauma-informed approach moves at your pace, honours your nervous system, and addresses how loss and earlier experiences interact. Available in person, virtually across Ontario and select Canadian provinces, and in-home or community in select Ontario regions.
Complicated Grief Therapy (CGT)
Specialized treatment for when grief becomes so intense and prolonged that it prevents you from functioning. CGT helps you process the loss, address avoidance, and gradually re-engage with life while maintaining a connection to your loved one. Available in person and virtually.

Grief Therapy for Every Age & Stage
Grief looks different at every age, and healing requires approaches that honour where you are developmentally and what this loss means in the context of your life.
For Adults
For adults, grief can be complicated by responsibilities that don’t pause — caring for children, showing up to work, managing finances. You might feel pressure to “move on” before you’re ready, or struggle with grief that shows up years after the loss.
Sometimes grief travels alongside depression or anxiety, especially when loss is recent or layered. We help you navigate grief while meeting life’s demands, process ambiguous losses (like estrangement or dementia), and find ways to honour your loss while building a meaningful future.
For Teens
For teens, grief is complicated by a brain still developing emotional regulation skills, peer pressure to seem “fine,” and feeling different from friends who haven’t experienced loss. Adolescents may express grief through anger, risk-taking, or withdrawal. We create space for teens to process loss authentically, without judgment, helping them understand their grief reactions and develop healthy coping strategies.
For Children
For children and youth, grief is confusing and often nonlinear. Young children may not have the language to express what they’re feeling, leading to behavioural changes, regression, or repeated questions about the loss. We use play therapy, art, and developmentally appropriate language to help children process grief, while supporting parents in having honest, age-appropriate conversations about loss.
For Families
For families grieving together, we help each member process their unique grief while maintaining connection and supporting one another through shared loss.
No matter your age or the type of loss you’ve experienced, your grief deserves to be witnessed and held with care — in person at our Ontario clinics, virtually across Ontario and select Canadian provinces, or in-home or community in select Ontario regions.
